Riddle of the Week is a fun, uplifting way to begin the school week, in addition to being an excellent tool for using English creatively.

We begin each Monday by asking students to solve a riddle. They can choose to write down their answers immediately or take the rest of the week to figure the riddle out. We have a dedicated riddle corner in our classroom with a place for the riddle and an envelope for the students’ answers. Students are always excited to see the new riddle and begin trying to break it apart. The riddles we use are usually word plays, encouraging students to use the words they already know in different, creative ways. It allows them to think about English phrases in depth and promotes lateral thinking. Students enjoy mysteries and love to solve riddles, especially when they get to do it in class with their friends.
